Homeschooling - My Personal Testimony

We started home schooling our first born in 1993, when he was six years old. It was never a question with us about whether to home school or not. We just knew that it was God's Will for our children to grow up and learn in a Christian enviornment.

The Bible says:

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6)

From all that's happened and is happening in the public school system in the last 40 to 50 years, we just knew that it was not an option.

The first thing that we did was to visit a local attorney that home schooled his kids. Well, you might say, I don't know an attorney that does this. All I can say to you is that if you are a Christian and pray about it, I believe that God will hear you and lead you by His Spirit, into how to go about it in your situation.

This attorney, brother in the Lord, did all the paper work that the state required (find out what your state requires) and charged us a small fee of $25. We eventually received a certificate from the state and we were now legal.

Twenty-three years ago, the movement was still a fledgling one so a lot of the things we did were trial and error. But God blessed our attempts and I tell you boldly, He gave our kids (daughter added to home school in 1997), wisdom to comprehend and apply their knowledge to everyday life.

We also learned early on that home schooling is NOT 8AM - 3:15PM, Monday through Friday. Not even!

It is also NOT Math for an hour, English for an hour, Spanish for an hour, Biology and so on. No, home schooling is 24/7 and that's what makes it fun and non-pressurized. Everything you do is schooling and everywhere you go is a field trip!

If there is a skill that one of your children wants or needs and you are unqualified to teach it, there is always a person in the neighborhood or community that will tudor your child at a reasonable price. Math, piano, guitar, Spanish, etc.

Lots and lots of free help on the internet. Just type in home school on Google and up comes more information that you can imagine.

Also, there are probably home school associations and groups in your neighborhood or community that you may like to join, especially for field trips and social activities.

As far as sports, we have a community athletic association that has year around sports, available for a nominal fee. Baseball, soccer, basketball, etc. My kids have been involved in all three. We live in a small town so there should be even more opportunity in larger urban areas.

I would leave you with this advice: The Bible says:

But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. (Luke 18:16).

This is exactly what they are doing in the public school system - forbidding the children to come unto Jesus.

It has been forgotten that our public school system in the USA was founded on the Bible being the primary textbook for study. Also, our leading universities like Harvard, Princeton, Yale were originally founded by Christians as missionary tools.

Do you know that the first public school in the USA was founded and run by a Christian ministry? Just Google the Boston City page and read about it. They still have it recorded.

How far we have fallen as a nation!
